Workshop 1, Algae - Algae workshop registration is full - Algae are an important part of a properly functioning natural aquatic system, but when algae become abundant, water uses and habitat are often impaired. All algae were not created equal, however, and proper identification is important to determining management strategy. With recent apparent increases in toxic algae and issues with taste and odor, understanding algae has become even more important. This workshop is intended to provide information on how to collect and recognize common genera within major groups of algae, with emphasis on taxonomic detail and identification approaches. Participants are encouraged to bring any algae samples with which they would like identification help. The workshop is taught by Ann St. Amand. She is an experienced algal taxonomist and ecologist. She has 27 years of experience assessing algal problems, evaluating impacts and causes of algal nuisances, and developing algal management programs.
Workshop 2, GPS Mapping - This workshop is limited to 25 participants. It is a “hands-on” extension of last year’s conference workshop, participants will learn the basics of digital data capture, GPS technology and online digital mapping. The workshop will consist of a field portion where each participant will collect real data, and a lab portion where the field data will be manipulated to create maps. Techniques learned from this workshop will be useful to for natural resources and lake management projects and sharing maps with others. This workshop will focus on free mapping software, available from Google Earth. Each participate will allowed to use a Garmin E-Trex unit for the workshop, courtesy of EA Engineering. Those with their own GPS units are invited to bring them. Note: a portion of the workshop will be held outside, please dress accordingly.
